Donning and Doffing

Consistent with recent rulings, employers from many industries including meat packing, food processing, chemical production and law enforcement may be liable for extra pay owed to their employees for time spent putting on (donning) and taking off (doffing) work-related protective gear. Several other pre-shift and post-shift job activities may also be subject to compensable time or overtime liability if tied to the primary function of the work. We review company policies, interview management, and observe incumbents in their jobs to advise clients regarding the relationship of pre-shift and post-shift activities to tasks that are considered “essential”. Job study methodology is at the core of this determination.
